Welcome to Louise Bell Quilts

Welcome to my website, I make patchwork and appliqué quilts for beds, chairs and walls in Liberty lawn, linens and silks.

I enjoy working to commission to make a quilt of any size, shape, colour and design. I am happy to work around themes, stories and ideas and to include favourite plants, landscapes or buildings in a design. I often use memory fabrics to make a bespoke quilt very personal.

Examples of my work can be found under the various headings and can help inspire you to request a commission.

Under the Shop Now tab are quilts, hangings and cushions ready made and available to buy now.

You are welcome to visit my workshop in Burwash or see me at a show.

My work is also in the Sussex Guild Shop, Lewes and Henry Paddon, Eastbourne.

My book ‘201 Quilt Blocks, Motifs and Ideas’, published by Cico in 2008 is available from me and several internet book sites.

I run a few appliqué and quilt making workshops at The Sussex Guild Shop in Lewes. Please contact me for details.

I was born and grew up in Quebec. My great grandmother and aunts had all made quilts and as a child, I counted the squares and triangles and I traced my finger along the hand quilting to work out how they were made. Why that fabric there? Some were wedding gifts, beautifully made with fabrics bought specially. Some were quickly made from scraps and left-overs, a Laurentian sugar refinery logo still showing on the backing fabric, not fully bleached out. I never met my great grandmother but I knew her and a little of her story through her quilts.

I studied French at University and, while waiting to graduate, I made my first quilt. It was a patchwork block quilt made from memory. I altered it a little to make it mine but later discovered it differed greatly from the original as my memory had been flawed. I made a second one, altering it a little further and a third and so it went. I registered self- employed as a quilt maker and have never looked back.
